PetrosainsAfterHours is back with a session on gerontechnology, an exciting new field studying how older persons can positively benefit from technology. Held in collaboration with Monash University Malaysia and IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Society (TEMS) Malaysia Chapter, the session is also in support of the ongoing Monash-Petrosains Gerontechnology Challenge 2018!

With Malaysia approaching the realities of an aging society, come see how efforts are made by various sectors to ensure an inclusive society empathetic to the changing needs of older people, and how technology can play a role. This engaging evening discourse will highlight new research, new approaches, and new tech in a relaxed atmosphere. The session is intended for anyone with an interest in Gerontechnology to learn and experience how we can fully leverage on the potential of today’s tech for the later years. Speaker’s Profile and Topic Brief:

  1. Dr. Teh Pei Lee is an Associate Professor at the School of Business, Monash University Malaysia. She holds the degrees of Bachelor of Information Technology, Master of Management, and a Ph.D. in Management. She is currently the Associate Editor of the Decision Sciences Journal of Innovative Education (DSJIE) and International Journal of Electronic Business (IJEB). She also serves in editorial board of several international journals and conferences such as Journal of Computer Information Systems, Industrial Management & Data Systems and International Conference on Cross-Cultural Design (affiliated conference of Human Computer Interaction International Conference). She is the founder and Chair of IEEE Malaysia Chapter Technology and Engineering Management Society (TEMS). She also founded the Gerontechnology Laboratory in Monash University, the first of its kind in Malaysia.

In this session, she will talk about the gerontechnology research in designing technology and environment for independent living supporting older people to have more productive and enjoyable lives. She will also share the interdisciplinary research projects in the Gerontechnology Laboratory in Monash University Malaysia.

 

  1. Speakers for five applications developed under the Ministry of Higher Education’s Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) are: Prof. Dr. Lee Chien Sing, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lee Yun Li, Ms. Lim Woan Ning and Adjunct Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wong Siew Fan. They are from the Department of Computing and Information Systems, School of Science and Technology, Sunway University, Malaysia. Prof. Dr. Lee Chien Sing is an IEEE TEMS (M) exco member, and a Fulbright Fellowship Alumni at Georgia Tech. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lee Yun Li was invited to be a member of the IDES and currently, is part of the IEEE society. Her current research includes ultrasound imaging for precision medical guidance, time series of FOREX data for prediction and designing a cognitive training game using augmented reality technology. Ms. Lim Woan Ning specializes in mobile app development and Adjunct Prof. Dr. Wong Siew Fan, information systems.

The five applications provide the necessary socio-cognitive-affective engagement to alleviate depression, maintain or enhance brain plasticity and create happier social ties as well as sense of personhood. They will also briefly present the various STEM fields which have contributed to the development of these applications to improve the elderlies’ quality of life. Most of the applications are reported under IEEE TEMS (M), SMC (M) and IEEE CNAG (M) and published in IEEE conferences. IEEE TEMS (M) organizes talks with breadth of coverage and depth in insights by international experts.

 

  1. Dr. Daniel Loy is currently the Director of the Centre of Learning & Innovation, Petrosains which looks at innovative approaches to science education while leading free choice learning research. As a strategist, educator, and communicator, he views innovation as a powerful tool to inspire and enable change for the better, especially towards greater inclusivity in society. Using and deploying technologies creatively and appropriately is a personal passion, with his current project, converting his home into a smart home.

In this session, Daniel will share his experience in adopting various off the shelf smart home technologies, weigh and discuss their potential and challenges for older persons, and provide an opportunity for attendees to try some of these devices themselves. The experiences shared will include the perspective of his parents who are early in their smart home journey.

Specific topics of interest include, but are not limited to: technology policy development, assessment, and transfer; research; product design and development; manufacturing operations; innovation and entrepreneurship; program and project management; strategy; education and training; organizational development and human behaviour; transitioning to management; and the socioeconomic impact of engineering and technology management.
