Overview:

A 30-minute seminar will be delivered by Prof. Dr. Eric Tsui from Hong Kong Polytechnic University, followed by a 10-minutes presentation by each Distinguished Panelist and Q&A session with the audience on the above topic.

About Speakers:

Professor Tsui started his career in industry and joined Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) in 1989 after years of academic research in automated knowledge acquisition, natural language processing, case-based reasoning and knowledge engineering tools. His research strengths include cloud-based business innovation and knowledge services. He returned to academia and joined PolyU in 2005 and until 2018 he was the Leader of the Master of Science in Knowledge Management (KM) degree program. He has consulted for many government departments and private organizations in Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Brunei. Professor Tsui is an honorary advisor of KM to three HKSARG departments and since 2008, he has been Vice President of the Hong Kong Knowledge Management Society. A veteran of E-Learning, he has received many Knowledge Management and E-Learning awards over the years including the prestigious QS Wharton Reimagine Education award and twice listed as an Outstanding/Exemplary Academic in the 2015/6 and 2016/7 PolyU Annual Reports.

Professor Alan Lau received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees of Engineering in Aerospace Engineering from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT University, Australia) in 1996 and 1997, respectively. Within that period, he also worked for General Aviation Maintenance Pty Ltd, Australia, as an Engineer Trainee, and for the Corporative Research Centre for Advanced Composite Structures (CRC-ACS) Australia, as a Research Assistant designing a repair scheme for composite performs. Afterward, he received his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2001. Thereafter, he was appointed Assistant Professor in 2002 and promoted to Associate Professor and Professor in 2005 and 2010, respectively. In 2015, he was appointed as Alex Wong/Gigi Wong Professor in Product Design Engineering and Associate Dean (Industrial Relation) in the Faculty of Engineering, PolyU. Currently, he is Pro Vice-Chancellor (International and Digital Research) of Swinburne University of Technology, Australia to look after its future research and ranking strategies. Professor Lau has received numerous research and teaching awards since 2002. In 2016, he was elected as Fellow of the European Academy of Science and Arts. To date only three academics in Australia have received this honour. His publications have received over 22,000 citations with h-index of 68. Since 2014, he has been elected as International Vice President of The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and appointed as Independent Non-executive Director of King’s Flair International (Holdings) Limited. Dr Lau was named Australian Research Theme Leader in “Composite Materials” in 2019. Today, Professor Lau has been appointed Director of Oceania Cybersecurity Centre Limited and Director of Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory Company.

Professor Dr.-Ing. Norbert Gronau (born 1964) studied engineering and business administration at Berlin University of Technology. He got his Ph.D. in 1994 and finished then his habilitation thesis in industrial information systems. Since more than ten years he holds the Chair of Business Informatics, esp. Processes and Systems at the University of Potsdam, Germany. His main research activities concentrate on the areas of information systems and process management in private and public
organisations. Together with his frm Potsdam Consulting Advisory Professor Gronau has supported a variety of small and large companies by advising them. Professor Gronau is editor of the scientifc journals Industrie4.0 Management and Fabriksoftware (Factory Software) and author of many research papers and books on enterprise systems, knowledge management and business process management. In Potsdam, he is director of the research and application center Industry 4.0, which is an
internationally recognised organisation for the advancement of the smart digital factory. He is on of the most knowledgeable experts on the German enterprise systems software market and its vendors.

Dr. Robest Yong , a name so synonymously linked to creativity and innovations rose from a humble ‘garage inventor’ to be appointed the Innovation Ambassador by Agency Innovation Malaysia (AIM) in 2010. He is a believer and practitioner of his own metaphor “Thinking Without the Box”, Robest had been involved in numerous innovation activities and chalked up multiple national and international awards of different fields and technologies since the early 1990s.

Overview:

In today’s competitive world, quality and reliability are of increasing importance to both manufacturer and consumer. There are many new research and application problems that have to be dealt with as systems have become more complex. In this talk, we will start with some industrial quality and reliability problems that are studied in our research, and discuss some engineering and managerial decision issues which are the ultimate objective in doing research. Some future and challenging issues in research and applications in quality and reliability engineering and management will also be discussed. Finally, we will also share some experience in publishing the results in reputable international journals.

About Speaker:

Prof. Min Xie completed his undergraduate study and received his MSc in 1984 from Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, and he later received his PhD in 1987 from Linkoping University, Sweden. Dr Xie joined the National University of Singapore in 1991 as one of the first recipients of the prestigious Lee Kuan Yew Research Fellowship. After 20 years, he moved to City University of Hong Kong as Chair Professor of Industrial Engineering in 2011. Prof Xie serves as an editor, associate editor and on the editorial board of 20 established international journals. Prof Xie has supervised over 50 PhD students and they hold regular positions in banking, industry and academia in different continents. Prof Xie was elected fellow of IEEE in 2005 for his contribution to software and systems reliability.

Speaker Profile: Dr Chong Zhi Lin is a Senior Lecturer in School of Mathematical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia. He received his PhD in Statistics (Quality Control) at a young age of 26 (year 2015) from USM, under the supervision of Prof Michael Khoo Boon Chong. After that, he lectured as an Assistant Professor for 4 years in Faculty of Science, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR). His research interest is in Statistical Process Control and nonparametric control charts. To date, he has published numerous journal articles in reputable Q1 or Q2 ISI journals, such as Computers & Industrial EngineeringQuality Engineering and Quality and Reliability Engineering International. He was invited to present his research in invited panel session of well-known International Statistical Institute (ISI) regional statistical conference (RSC) in 2017 and ISI World Statistical Congress (WSC) in 2019. Moreover, he was appointed as referees in many well-known ISI journals within his research field and granted the Fundamental Research Grant Schemes (FRGS) in 2016 and 2019.

Overview: Several universities in Hong Kong were hit by more than the Covid-19 crisis and adoption of online classes started as early as mid-November 2019. In terms of student size, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is the largest one in Hong Kong. The seminar will discuss comprehensively the alternative Teaching and Learning practices taken up by PolyU in response to the threats from the crises, support services provided, as well as feedback from teachers and students. Solutions to combating two major challenges encountered – providing unfettered Internet access for students residing inside mainland China and the tightening of security measures in the use of cloud-based collaboration tools are also outlined. This talk will conclude with a list of critical factors that ensures the success of online teaching and learning, and surprisingly the opportunities opened up as a result of being forced to operate in a highly confined and restrictive environment.

This webinar covers the digital technologies which will have the inevitable impact on logistics engineering and management in the coming years with solutions such as voice recognition, robotics, artificial intelligence and machine learning. About Speaker

TEH Sin Yin (Ph.D., CMILT, MLogM) is a Senior Lecturer and the Program Chairperson of Operations Management, Business Analytics and Marketing at the School of Management, Universiti Sains Malaysia. She was a fellow and member of the United Nations System Staff College (UNSSC) and Data-Pop Alliance. She was also research fellow at the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) and University Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR).

Dr. Teh is a certified TRIZ and HRDF instructor. She was involved in and had successfully completed research projects on “Information, Communication and Technologies (ICT)” with the Penang state government; “a mobile learning system using machine learning and cloud” with Motorola Solutions Malaysia; and “an integration of FMEA and TRIZ” with Sanmina-SCI Systems. Dr. Teh’s research interests are logistics and engineering management, operations management, business analytics, statistical process/quality control, data mining, robust statistics and TRIZ theory of inventive problem solving. She has published nearly 100 articles in several renowned international peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings, including excellent journals of ISI Q1 or Q2 such as Computers & Industrial Engineering, Quality and Reliability Engineering International, and European Journal of Operational Research. She has attended many conferences and held the position of keynote speakers and session chairs.

Speakers Profile

Dr. Lu Ying is currently a senior data scientist at Google in Mountain View, California, USA. He works on various areas including recommendation, user behaviour analysis and experimentation. His passion is to change the way businesses do using data-driven techniques. Before he joined Google, he has worked for Amazon, Microsoft and Disney. He received his bachelor’s degree in Math at Fudan University, Shanghai, and PhD in Stats at University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. He has several publications on data science applications, and has written a book called Learning AI using Keras. In this talk, he will share about Data Science and Artificial Intelligent (AI), touching on various data science and AI applications, especially in the field of internet service, retail, finance and security. At the end of this talk, participants will be able to discover how Data Science and AI can help to serve users better, manage risk and make their lives safer.  

Mr. Thomas Cheah, Principal CTO-for-hire at Procto will talk on How Geeks Screw Up Startups: Top 10 techie traits that kill your business, referring to some behaviors that techies should be aware of when starting up their own business.
