Greetings.

Seniors Connected: Making Technology Relevant For the Older Persons

Gerontechnology Exhibition and Special Talk/Storytelling Series

Petrosains has teamed up with Monash University Malaysia Gerontechnology Lab and IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Society (TEMS) Malaysia Chapter to organize a gerontechnology exhibition and a series of special talks/storytelling on technology and ageing.

What is gerontechnology?

Gerontechnology is an interdisciplinary field of scientific research in which technology is directed towards the aspirations and opportunities for older persons. Currently, there are about 901 million persons aged 60 years and above. This number will increase by 2025 and will reach 2.1 billion by 2050. All of us will inevitably age, and thus it pays to start looking into our future selves and experience how we can be empowered. This 2-week event aims to promote active ageing and independent living through technology, innovation and valuable experiences from the subject matter experts.

Special Talk/Storytelling Series @ Galleria 1

11 Jan 2017 (Wed) – Active Ageing

Venue: Galleria 1 @ Petrosains, Level 4, Suria KLCC

Time: 1.00 pm – 3.00 pm

Ms. Lily Fu from SeniorsAloud, an NGO that promotes active lifestyle and lifelong learning will be sharing about active ageing and how seniors can make the best out of their golden years. She has also invited Grab, who will be introducing their new app Grab Superheroes during the talk with Lily, designed to aid and support the differently abled and older persons.

Other talks/storytelling sessions are as follows:

  • 13 Jan 2017 (Fri) – Caregiving and Assistive Technologies In The Golden Years

Ms. Saramma Joseph from Monash University Malaysia will be sharing about her journey of being a caregiver for family members with dementia. She will also be sharing about how assistive technologies played a key part in facilitating care.

  • 18 Jan 2017 (Wed) – A Reflective Look At Lifelong Learning

Mr. Cheang Kok Meng from IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Society (TEMS) Malaysia Chapter will be sharing about the journey of life, reflections from a lifetime’s experience, intellectual and emotional discoveries – from perspectives in science, technology and meditative practices. Examining what it means to be human in the future world of science and technology which is advancing at such a blistering pace that has left many other areas of human endeavours unable to cope with the implications and consequences of its impact on society and raising difficult questions such as the thin line between what is life and what is not.

  • 20 Jan 2017 (Fri) – Managing Money and Financial Technology for Seniors

Mr. Christopher Chew from IEEE Malaysia Section and IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Society (TEMS) Malaysia Chapter will be speaking about financial planning for seniors. He will be sharing about how technological appliances and applications are available to help the less numerate even though adopting and adapting to their use can also be quite difficult for some, especially the seniors.

Gerontechnology Exhibition @HotScience

Date: 10 – 25 January 2017

Venue: HotScience @ Petrosains, Level 4, Suria KLCC

Time: 10.00 am – 4.00 pm

-Showcasing age simulation suit and gerontechnology applications such as walking stick, mobile bathtubs, kitchen utensils, etc.

-Participate in a research experiment on smartphone home system specially designed for the seniors.
